Murphy’s Law

By Staff | Jun 21, 2011

If anything can go wrong, it will.

That phrase, or a variation thereof, is what is referred to as Murphy’s Law. People have been quoting it since the 1960s. That’s because we’ve all experienced Murphy’s Law at some point (or points!) in our lives.

I had a Murphy’s Law experience Saturday evening. Without going into all the details, suffice it to say that the day went from a rather euphoric start to a pretty dismal end.

The best part of the story is that no one was injured or died and for the most part no hearts were broken and no money was lost.

But the very best part is that no one got horribly irritated during the entire ordeal.

Since Father’s Day followed this ordeal it made me reflect on how my dad (and mother) positively influenced my and my siblings lives when it came to dealing with adversity. We were taught to accept life as it came and generally look at the bright side of things. We even believe that all things, even the bad, happen for a reason.

For instance, a few weeks ago my sisters and I got a late start on a Saturday trip. Halfway down the road we came across a fatal car crash. Had we left sooner, we could have been part of that tragedy.

My parents once took a cross-country trip with three to four children in a beat-up jalopy of a vehicle. Their neighbors told them they were crazy to even attempt such a thing. My dad simply said he was taking the vehicle’s title and if it broke down, they’d sell the car and take the bus home. They never needed that title.

Late in life my parents took another cross-country trip in an RV. Everyone said they were too old to go it alone. We said they could die in Utah as well as in New Martinsville. They didn’t die on the trip, but it was the last trip they were ever able to take.

I plan to enjoy life despite Murphy’s Law. I hope you will too.
