The New Martinsville Police Department continues to investigate a fire at the former Iams Funeral Home that the New Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department has deemed suspicious.

New Martinsville fiirefighters were summoned to the location on state Route 2 in the early morning hours Monday. The fire, which was reported at approximately 4:20 a.m. was discovered and reported by the building’s owner.

As firefighters arrived, they found fire coming from a window and door in the northern extension of the former funeral home and were quickly able to knock the fire down. Fire had extended into the attic section of the building which slowed the assurance that the fire had been stopped before extending to the south portion of the building, where viewings formerly took place, and the north section where the garages are.

A small room was heavily damaged by fire. Also, a large section of the attic and a room adjacent to the original room where the fire appeared to have begun had heavy smoke damage. Damages to the structure and contents were estimated at $33,000.

Firefighters cleared the scene at approximately 6:30 a.m. Agencies at the fire scene included the NMVFD, NMPD, Paden City Volunteer Fire Company, New Martinsville Electric Department, Mountaineer Gas, New Martinsville Water Department, and Wetzel County Emergency Medical Service.
