Esther Crumbley Fund Kicks Off Annual Drive
Although it’s early October, there’s less than three months to collect the needed $8,000 or more cash to purchase food supplies for the Esther Crumbley Fund. For $25, food such as chickens, canned fruits, vegetables, and the like will be purchased to put together holiday meal packages for Wetzel County’s 425 or more needy families.
The New Martinsville Ministerial Association is asking for donations of any amount. Chairman Ephram Wade noted the New Martinsville Ministerial Association hopes to be able to provide an even better meal this year for the families.
The Esther Crumbley Fund, started in the early 1980s by Esther Crumbley herself, has become a much needed tradition in Wetzel County. Bags of food will be assembled Dec. 20 and distributed Dec. 21 at Klug Hall, St. Vincent de Paul Church. High school and college youth usually assist, along with adult volunteers.
Registration for food baskets will be coordinated by Catholic Charities of West Virginia. They will be taking applications on Nov. 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, and 18 at Klug Hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All applicants must bring proof of residency. This sign-up is for low-income and Wetzel County residents only. For any questions call 304-424-3457 ext. 130.
The organization will also sign up families for Secret Santa gifts. The gifts will be purchased by members of local churches and businesses, as well as other individuals.
Distribution will also feature donations of Christmas trees, wreaths, decorations, and possibly new books.
