Board Approves Matters

Two students Oct. 4 were permitted to continue attending Wetzel County Schools this year by the board of education, which also voted to allow three other students to attend school elsewhere. The children of Ryan and Jackie Layman will continue their schooling at New Martinsville School, while the children of Stephanie and Earnest Francis will attend Tyler County schools.

The board also authorized Melissa Sayer to attend Hundred High School for period two through seven for the rest of the school year. The action was endorsed by HHS Principal Richard Oschenbein.

The board also acted on several personnel matters, including accepting the immediate resignation of Virgil Wilkins as assistant boys’ basketball coach at HHS. Also accepted was the immediate resignation of Jacqueline D. Jenkins as SAT coordinator at Short Line School. Contracted services were approved for Kimberly S. Edgell to succeed Cain.

Also at SLS, Valerie J. Cain was approved for a contracted services position as alternative education instructor at the school and at Valley High School. In the only other personnel change at SLS, Wilma M. Morris’ assignment was changed to cook III from a similar position at NMS.

At Long Drain School, Chris M. Wilson was approved as halftime countywide MI/LD/BD with Autism teacher based here and Kimberly S. Haught was approved for employment as countywide supervisory teach aide-special education.

Contracted services were approved for Mark D. Lemasters and Amanda M. McPherson as academic coaches at Magnolia High School and Melissa J. Landis was similarly employed as alternative education instructor at the Wetzel County Center for Children and Families.

The final personnel changes the board acted on were to approve a change in assignment for Virginia L. Brown from countywide supervisory teacher aide based at WCCCF to the same position aboard special ed Bus #20. Velisha I. Shepherd’s assignment was changed from countywide preschool special needs teacher based at SLS/LDS to countywide MI/LD/BD with Autism based at SLS.

Finally, the board approved the employment of Joshua P. Tustin as mechanic assistant and of John E. Bell as bus operator on the Trader Run/Stout Run/Fallen Timber/Arches Fork bus route driving Bus #12.

The board approved an unpaid leave of absence, maternity, for Juliann M. Allman from her job as kindergarten teacher at Paden City Elementary School from Dec. 13 through Feb. 11, 2011. The same leave was approved for Therese A. Headley from Sept. 29-Oct. 18. Headley is a custodian at NMS.

An out-of-state trip request was approved for Danielle Standiford to attend the Hand Writing Without Tears Conference in Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 29. In addition, a trip was approved for the following persons to attend the SDE Ohio Middle School conference on Columbus Nov. 29-30: Shane Highley, Pam Christy, Phil Hulsey, Jennifer Eller, Judy Hughan, Tracy Mason, Kim Nelson, and Leslie Lively.

Highly also will attend the National PBIS Conference in Chicago, Ill., Oct. 13-15, accompanied by Susan Flesher, Mollie Toppe, Jade Spencer, and Marsha Stackpole. All trips will be paid from Title I funds.
