Pine Grove Woman Almost Falls Victim To Phone Scam

By Staff | Sep 8, 2010

Another phone scam has been reported in Wetzel County targeting the elderly.

On Aug. 30 a Pine Grove woman received a call around 3:30 p.m. from a man claiming to be from Social Security Administration.

He then recited the woman’s bank account number and routing number and asked for verification that the information was correct.

The caller then stated he was notifying her that $500 would be deposited into her account monthly.

After the call ended the woman thought she might have been scammed so she called Social Security and no one had any idea what she was talking about. She then called her bank and had her funds transferred to a new account as a precaution. She also reported the occurrence to the Wetzel County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone receiving such calls are urged not to verify any information and notify law enforcement immediately.
