Paden City Council Hears Several Reports
Several committee reports were given and resolutions read at the Paden City Council meeting on Monday.
Paden City resident Sue Flesher posed the question as to who was in charge of looking at ordinance complaints? Flesher said she has filed three complaints in the last few weeks and had heard nothing back from anyone as to the result of her complaints.
Mayor Bill Fox said he did not know why the issues were not addressed and assured her that the matter would be looked into and an answer to her question would be resolved soon.
Fox congratulated Clifford Duke, city superintendent, and crew on the fine and efficient work on a water leak in the city last week.
A handicapped parking permit was approved for 222 N. 7th Street.
The Mayor read a letter from Joe Ward, a volunteer at the New Martinsville Riverfront Development Committee, thanking the Paden City Volunteer Fire Department for their work at the Festival of Memories. He praised the excellent work done by volunteers from Paden City.
Councilman Bob Casteel reported that the Park and Pool revenue is up this year over last year. “Over 40 private parties were held there before the end of July and we still have another month to go,” he said.
The repairs made to the pool area, the drain covers, the diving board, and the concrete by the slides, as well as the addition of the slides, have improved the pool greatly. “Things are looking up,” he said.
Councilman Larry Potts reported on the Paden City Development Authority, saying work is planned on the gym roof. “We’re doing stuff, it’s just not showing up yet,” he said.
Under new business, council approved a resolution calling for the defeat of Amendment to H.R. 4899 dealing with collective bargaining. The resolution reads in part, “The City of Paden City resolves and calls upon the United States Senate to find and determine that the issue of collective bargaining is a truly local issue that should be left to the wise determination of the local units of government most affected by the same, and in such respect, further prays that such United States Senate refuses to take up action on the same in this legislation.”
Also approved by council was a West Virginia Division of Energy Grant Resolution. The West Virginia Division of Energy has received funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant. The funding will be used to assist eligible units of local government in improving the energy efficiency of their principal buildings. The resolution reads, ” . . . that the City of Paden City hereby authorizes the Mayor of Paden City to execute and submit the Consulting Agreement with Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Planning and Development Council and any other documents relating to the implementation of this grant and project.”
Council approved a motion to re-hire all city employees and tabled a discussion on unused vacation days by city employees until a later date.
The second reading of an ordinance to amend ordinance 533.11, titled “weeds”, was read and approved. The ordinance will change the wording in the first ordinance of the height of weeds in Paden City from 12″ to 8″ . Councilman Casteel said he has had a lot of complaints about people parking in the grass at the park. “We need more signs or something,” he said. “People pull up to unload at the pavilion and then instead of moving their vehicles, they just leave them there.”
“We need to make sure people understand that they can pull up there to unload or drop people off, but they need to remove their cars immediately and park in the parking lot provided,” the Mayor said.
The next Paden City Council meeting will be held on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.
