Community members and city employees gathered Friday afternoon to acknowledge the construction of a new well for New Martinsville, named to honor Fred Fonner.

Fonner is an original member of the Water and Sewage Board which came into existence on Aug. 4, 1980. He has also worked for the City on special projects requiring technical ability.

Fonner and his wife, Mary Ann, moved to New Martinsville in June 1950. He became involved in the community theater in 1960 and helped with productions and lighting.

He is the father of four sons: Richard, Rob (Fred), John, and Tom. Mayor Lucille Blum congratulated Fonner on the wonderful family that he and Mary Ann raised in the city.

The new well was constructed by employees of the Water and Sewer Department and took approximately 18 months to complete. Their hard work and dedication saved the city roughly a half-million dollars. Those who worked on the well include: David Benson, David Blair, Pat Durant, Charlie Eastham, Donzel Hornbeck, Dave Hoskins, Charlie Slider, Joe Smith, and Scott Wade.
