Grant Will Fund Full-Time Officer At VHS
A state grant will fund a full-time resource officer for Valley High School in the 2010-11 school year, according to an announcement by County Superintendent of Schools Bill Jones at the June 7 meeting of the Wetzel County Board of Education.
Wetzel County Sheriff’s Deputy Donald Bordenkircher will continue in that position that he has held for two years.
The board approved an out-of-state trip request from David Kimble to take several Magnolia High School TSA members to the TSA National Conference in Baltimore June 28-July 2. Students Kyle Veyon, Joey Ingold, Bryan Huggins, Joe Feeney, Luke Dieffenbauch, Ryan Ritchea, and Jessica Goddard will make the trip.
David and Brenda Kimble will chaperone. The trip will be paid by the state TSA organization and through the school’s vocational department.
In addition, a request from Bruce Ensinger was approved to take the New Martinsville School 7/8 Choir to Kennywood Park June 5, funded by student fees.
The board approved several requests to attend Wetzel County Schools in the 2010-11 school year, as well as several requests to attend schools elsewhere during that period. Shawna Christner’s two children will continue attending Paden City Elementary School and Sandra Durrah’s two children will continue attending MHS.
Released to attend Tyler County Schools were the son of Cathy Hinkle from Paden City High School; the children of Denise Kehrer from MHS; and the child of Sheri Jackson from New Martinsville School. A request also was approved from Darla Stout for her child to be released from Valley High School to attend Harrison County Schools.
Early graduation year was approved for MHS junior Maryam Boumezrag, providing she successfully completes the requirements for several subjects and has accumulated sufficient credits for graduation. That request was endorsed by MHS Principal Kathi Schmalz.
Classes at NMS were approved for early dismissal on June 7 because of HVAC renovations at the school, making the last day of classes at this school for the 2009-10 school year Friday, June 4.
An unpaid medical leave of absence was approved for Amanda J. Ice from her position as countywide preschool/special needs teacher at Short Line School, from June 2-June 9.
The board approved a very large number of other staffing and personnel changes, including accepting the resignations of Joan E. Kerns as SAT Coordinator at VHS and of Danielle M. Standiford as a summer program teacher at SLS.
Standiford also was taken from the Reduction-in-Force list and reassigned as second grade teacher at Long Drain School for the 2010-11 school year. She also was extended contracted services as summer Title I program teacher at SLS.
Contracted services were approved for Tara R. Adams as a summer program teacher at SLS and for Vickey L. Titus as a summer program cook at the school.
Also at SLS, contracted services were approved for Juliann M. Allman as countywide extended year program Special Needs teacher, effective June 10.
The following persons were extended contracted service positions as Summer Title I Program teachers at SLS: Cynthia J. Brown, Susan K. Flesher, Ashley N. Goddard, Holly A. Groves, Linda J. Haught, Deanna L. Heasley, Cynthia S. McSweeney, Patricia M. Potts, and Meredith L. Tusic.
In addition, the following persons were given contracted services as summer program bus operators at SLS: Sandra J. Hurst, Regina L. Lemley, and Rick J. Yoho. Carol S. Cecil and William S. Dakan were given contracted services for the same position at LDS and Sandra D. Geho was approved for contracted services as summer program cook at LDS.
The board also approved contracted services for Christina N. McCoy as countywide supervisory teacher aide/autism mentor based at SLS.
Donna J. Myers was approved for contracted services as summer program custodian and Cathrina J. Spencer will be summer Title I program coordinator/teacher based at this school.
At VHS, personnel changes included a change in assignment for John R. Tomaszewski from guidance counselor at MHS to the same position at Valley beginning with the 12010-11 school year.
In addition, Donald E. Taylor was approved for employment as band director/general music teacher/choral director, effective July 1, 2010, and pending a law enforcement background check.
At New Martinsville School, the board approved the hiring of Alexis J. Robinson as countywide MI/LD/BD/Autism teacher for 2010-11 based at NMS.
Meanwhile, the assignment of Mary A. Young was changed from MI/LD/BD teacher to second grade and Mary E. Bartsch was approved for contracted services as extended year program countywide speech therapist.
Roger J. Clegg was approved for the positions of 7th grade volleyball coach and for the same position with the 8th grade, while Joe O. Flesher was approved for contracted services as summer program custodian. Clegg’s position is non-certified and not funded with public money.
The board approved Byran E. Hostetler as 7/8 grade football coach and Theresa A. Hostetler as athletic trainer. Both positions are non-certified.
In addition, contracted services were approved for Candace O. Landers and Teresa D. Long as summer program cooks. Contracted services also were approved for Pamela J. Shockley as countywide extended year program supervisory teacher aide/autism mentor.

At the Wetzel County Center for Children and Families Terry D. Greene was awarded contracted services as countywide extended year supervisory teacher aide, while the same contract was approved for Kimberly A. Sobataka as countywide extended year preschool needs teacher based at the center.
Carol A. Zombatti also was awarded contracted services as countywide extended year speech therapist based at WCCCF.

Linda K. Barth’s assignment was changed to coordinator/accountant of transportation/child nutrition/maintenance, pay grade H; and
Debra J. Talkington was reclassified to secretary III/accountant/payroll coordinator, pay grade H.
The board has set its next regular meeting for June 21 at the county office building, beginning at 7 p.m.
