NMP&R Plans Summer Events

By Staff | Jun 9, 2010

The New Martinsville Parks and Recreation Commission will be sponsoring two free concerts in June at Bruce Park, The concerts will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. under the large shelter. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the evening.

On June 17 the featured artist will be Denis Moreau, whose folk/country music has been a crowd favorite throughout the area. June 20 will feature another area favorite, Michael Parsons and Friends. Their repertoire will consist of country/swing music.

The parks will then be preparing for the annual Fourth of July Celebration, Arts in the Park, held in conjunction with ArtsLink. This year’s festivities will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature local performers and craft artists.

“There will be a lot of different free events going on throughout town during the next few months,” noted Parks and Recreation Director Bev Gibb.

She outlined these and several other of the department’s programs at Monday’s council meeting.

The entity will also sponsor Safety Town for children ages four through six at the Lewis Wetzel Family Center June 14-25, a free volleyball clinic now through June 10, volleyball camp with Wheeling Jesuit University June 21 and 22, the Ohio River Sweep June 19, and Summer Day Camp July 5-29, Monday through Thursday.

She added that Lewis Wetzel Pool opened Saturday. The department is planning on hosting some adult swim times a couple days per week, but those are not scheduled yet.

Also, Gibb noted that the department is once again selling discounted tickets for Kennywood Park, Idlewild, and Sandcastle. For example, Kennywood tickets are sold at $10 off the gate price.

Finally, city council approved the appointment of Bruce Crawford to replace Tina Hazen as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner effective Aug. 1. The Hazen family will be moving to Texas.

“Our community is losing a very nice family-all of them,” said Gibb. “We think Bruce will be a nice addition to the parks commission.”
