Low, But Still High

By Staff | May 19, 2010

We thought it was terrible that the voter turnout in Wetzel County was a mere 32 percent, that was until we found out an abysmal one-third response was actually stellar in the statewide picture. Statewide the voter turnout rate was 15-20 percent. Secretary of State Natalie Tennant was expecting 25 percent, based on the 2006 primary numbers.

Evidently the rain on Election?Day discouraged some people from exercising their rights to elect public representatives.

Wetzel County may have done well in comparison, but such a low turnout is still shameful. Maybe it wasn’t a presidential year, but sometimes the local races are of even greater importance in individual’s lives.

Also, the First Congressional Race was certainly a big one and one to continue to watch through the general election. It could help decide the majority in congress. In fact, the nation is watching this one. If people outside of our district, even state, care, shouldn’t you?
