Mayernik To Play Concert Sunday

Luke Mayernik
On Sunday the next concert of the ’09-10 ArtsLink Series will be held at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in New Martinsville. The performance will begin at 3 p.m. and will feature renowned Pittsburgh organist Luke Mayernik.
Mayernik was born and raised in Monessen, Pa. He studied organ at Duquesne University and composition at Carnegie-Mellon University. He is a composer as well as a performer, and his music has been broadcast on WQED, Pittsburgh’s classical music station. His current position is organist at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Wheeling. At the request of Maggie Stewart, a cast member from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, Mayernik composed In Memoriam: A Requiem for Fred Rogers. This particular composition earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination.
ArtsLink Board of Directors member Bruce Ensinger, a talented musician himself, states, “This concert is a must-see for all residents who appreciate fine classical music.”
Local sponsors for this concert are Barbara and Tom Daly. Additional financial assistance comes from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. Further local support is provided by West Virginia Northern Community College and WETZ and WYMJ Radio stations.
