Wetzel Chamber Passes Resolution Urging Support

By Staff | Aug 26, 2009

The Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce on Aug. 5 passed a resolution urging Wetzel County’s political representatives to actively intervene in the loss of jobs from the Bayer and Ormet Corporations and possible closing of the Ormet Corporation located in Monroe County, Ohio, and to assist with economic growth in the area.Whereas, WCCC represents over 150 businesses located in Wetzel County and surrounding counties as well as partners with city, county and state government; and,

Whereas, being concerned citizens, business owners, and community leaders; and,

Whereas, our mission is to

-Serve as a valuable resource to its members and community;

-Work as an advocate for our business community;

-Sponsor aggressive programs of work and stimulate activities that will provide and encourage the employment of our human and economic resources;

-Provide business leadership and coordinate interested parties in solving community problems and in initiating community action;

-Create a broad understanding and appreciation of the great opportunities in the Wetzel County area, and to promote the advantages and assets of our community within the area, the state, and the nation; and

-Be a strong partner in the enhancement of our economic, cultural, and civic welfare;

Whereas, the chamber is alarmed by the impact on the surrounding communities due to lay-offs and possible closures having a negative economic effect:

-In that people are leaving the area, thus children are leaving our school system causing a reduction in educational staff,

-Customers are delaying purchases of needed goods and services, thus impacting the business of the retail establishments,

-And the overall climate is not conducive for outsiders to consider coming to this market, etc.

Now therefore, be it resolved, that the Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce strongly urges all political leaders to:

-Immediately initiate contact with these companies to negotiate possible resolutions to financial issues,

-Market Wetzel County on a state and federal level for new business development and business expansion projects,

-Provide support to city and county government to market Wetzel County as an area for new businesses to locate,

-Provide financial support and tax breaks to new businesses wanting to relocate in Wetzel County,

-Provide funding for land development and infrastructure maintenance and expansion to make it accessible and desirable for business development, and

-Provide funding for educational re-training programs for unemployed residents.
