Wednesday and Thursday, December 18 and 19, were special days for nearly 50 kids in the local area as they were randomly selected to participate in the Wetzel County Sheriff's Department and New Martinsville Police Departments annual "Shop with a Cop" event.

The kids were picked up by local law enforcement officers at their respective schools and transported to New Martinsville Wal-Mart for a once in a lifetime shopping experience.

Upon arrival at the local retailer they were greeted by smiling officers waiting to escort them throughout the store were they were able to pick and choose girts for themselves and other family members.

Each child was assigned to shop alongside an officer who helped them make decisions as they were afforded $250 to spend on what ever caught their eye.

Some kids chose several different items while others went for the big ticket gifts like computers or cell phones. Whatever they chose however, they all went home with a smile.

"It was a great day for many of the areas children and the Wetzel County Sheriff's Department was proud to be a part of it, " stated Wetzel County Sheriff Mike Koontz. "Any time we can bring joy into the lives of children we are delighted to do so."

"We have been fundraising for this event all year and these past two days have showed the results of those efforts as we were able to spend in excess of $10,000 to make the holiday season brighter for 50 plus Wetzel County children," Chief Tim Cecil of the New Martinsville Police Department said.
