Five Wetzel Grads Earn Scholarship

Five Wetzel County seniors have been awarded a $1,000 Tad Fitzsimmons Memorial Scholarship for 2019. The awards were presented on Awards Day at the respective high schools.

This year's recipients are Megan Brown from Valley High School, Trey Slider from Paden City High School, and from Magnolia High School, Jared Kocher, Eli Nice and Lindsay Whiteman.

Megan Brown is the daughter of Brad and Kari Brown. Megan will be attending Fairmont State University this fall and major in Elementary Education. She has maintained a 3.7 GPA while attending Valley High School. She was involved in athletics including volleyball, softball and cheer-leading. She was in the band and the feature twirler. Megan was assistant editor of the yearbook and belonged to the Raze Club.

While attending Paden City High School, Trey Slider maintained a 4.0 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society, Cat's Club, and on the Student Advisory Council. He played baseball and basketball. He is the son of Gary (Jay) and Janet Slider. Trey will attend West Liberty University in the Fall and major in Sports Management and minor in Athletic Coaching.

Jared Kocher is the son of Stephen and Holly Kocher. He is a graduate of Magnolia High School where he maintained a 4.0 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society, MU Alpha Theta, Science National Honor Society, OVAC All-Conference Academic team, and competed in Match Field Day. He has volunteered for many community activities and fundraisers. Jared will attend West Virginia University this Fall and major in Nursing.

Eli Nice graduated from Magnolia High School where he maintained a 4.0 GPA. He is the son of Dave and Kim Nice. He participated in baseball and basketball. Eli was a member of the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He has belonged to Kids's Kollege and worked at Town and County Days raising money for Children's Hospital and has been involved in many other community activities. Eli will attend West Liberty University the Fall majoring in Exercise Physiology.

A graduate from Magnolia High School, Lindsay Whiteman will attend Pierpont Community and Technical College this Fall majoring in Health Science and applying to the Radio-logic Technology Program. While attending Magnolia, Lindsay has maintained a 4.0 GPA. She was in the Honor Honor Society, Senior Class Treasurer, Thespians, and Red Cross Blood Drive team. She was also involved in Soccer and softball. Lindsay belonged to Young Life and was Rotary Student of the Month. She is the daughter of Scott and Jeanette Whiteman.

The scholarships are funded from proceeds of the previous Tad Fitzsimmons 5KRun/Walks that were held for 8-years in Tad's honor and the generous donations from businesses and friends.
