Thank You Mr. Gorby

January 2, 2019
Wetzel Chronicle

We are preparing our Jan. 2 edition of the Wetzel Chronicle early again, due to the New Year holiday. Thus, it has been just a couple of days since Mr. Robert "Bob" Gorby's last meeting as a Wetzel County commissioner. As of this writing, his retirement party was held yesterday (Dec. 27) at the Wetzel County Courthouse.

It's a rather bittersweet situation.

We are happy for Mr. Gorby as he retires, and is hopefully able to spend more time with loved ones and leisurely pursuits. However, his departure -- after years and years of service to his county -- leaves us feeling selfishly sad.

In May 2018, we published an article on Gorby's impending retirement. Gorby had noted that the county commissioners had all worked very well together over the years. He had said that though disagreements might happen at times, he and fellow commissioners would talk issues over and come to an agreement "for the sake of the county."

This exemplifies one of the many qualities that made Gorby a good leader.

From a professional standpoint, we always found Gorby to be fair and transparent with our reporters. Speaking on a more personal level, we have always found him to be genuine and kind-hearted as well.

Gorby's time in office is connected to several monumental happenings for our county -- 4-H campground renovations, AirEvac memberships for residents, funds for local first response agencies, and much, much more.

At the conclusion of our May 2018 article about Gorby's impending retirement, we quoted Mr. Gorby as declaring, "It has been a very good 18 years."

We are sure your fellow Wetzel County residents agree.

Thank you for your love and service to Wetzel County, Mr. Gorby. Happy retirement.
