New Martinsville Council Hears From Steelton Residents

By Staff | Dec 12, 2018

Ed Knowlton and John McCulley appeared before New Martinsville City Council on Monday, Dec. 3 to inquire about water and sewage problems in the East Thistle Drive area of New Martinsville. Both gentlemen have been approaching council at meetings on a regular basis since July.

Knowlton, who was first to speak, asked council for an update on progress it is making toward fixing water and sewage issues he and other have had in their neighborhood.

“I would just like to know where we are. It is my understanding that there are seven homes who have their water going into the sewer system,” Knowlton said.

Councilman Steve Pallisco, chairman of the street and water committee, said the city is working hard to remedy the problem. He added the city just received a 185 page report back from an engineering firm study, and he’s not sure what all is included in the report. “Once we fine out who’s flooding the system and what else may be happening, we will take the appropriate action to get the situation corrected,” Pallisco said. He added letters will be sent to the offenders, and the offenders will be given time to correct the problems. He was not certain how long the process would take but assured Knowlton it will get done.

Knowlton asked how long it would take after the offenders receive the letters to get in compliance. Pallisco said he was uncertain, but the city can take legal action to enforce, as well as levy fines against the offenders.

Knowlton said he just wanted to inquire as to what the city was doing and get an idea as to how long the process was going to take. He asked if it would be completed by spring. Pallisco said he couldn’t give a specific date.
