Head of W.Va. Bureau of Medical Services on leave

August 11, 2014
Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia Bureau of Medical Services Commissioner Nancy Atkins has taken an extended leave from her job.

State Department of Health and Human Resources spokeswoman Allison Adler says she can't comment on the circumstances of Atkins' leave.

Adler tells the Charleston Daily Mail (http://bit.ly/1pmq5qC) that DHHR Secretary Karen Bowling named Cindy Beane as acting commissioner on Aug. 4. Beane was the bureau's deputy commissioner of policy coordination.

Adler says before Beane took the interim role, DHHR Deputy Secretary Jeremiah Samples handled Atkins' administrative duties for three weeks.

Atkins was appointed commissioner in 2001 by then-Gov. Bob Wise and reappointed by then-Gov. Joe Manchin in 2005.

The Bureau of Medical Services handles the state's Medicaid program.
