Parks and Recreation Announces Projects

August 8, 2018
Wetzel Chronicle

With the start of school classes and sports, comes the changing of the itinerary for New Martinsville Parks and Recreation. The operating hours at Lewis-Wetzel Pool and Paddle Boats, as well as Bruce Miniature Golf, will be adapted so that services can still be offered. The hours are listed on the Parks and Recreation Facebook Page (N.M. Parks) as well as at each facility. Individuals may also call the Parks Office or Lewis-Wetzel Swimming Pool at 304-455-9135 for questions concerning the hours.

The community will see some changes in the park facilities during the next several months. The Lincoln Theater will undergo renovations on the back, outside wall, thanks to a $22,000 grant received from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. The Parks Department will match that amount and the project will be placed out for bid in the near future.

Additionally, generous grant monies - made possible from the EQT Foundation, The Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley, Harry and Olive Barth Foundation, as well as the Walmart Foundation - will make a new playground at Bruce Park possible. Once constructed, the playground will officially be named the EQT Playground. The project will be placed out for bid over the next couple of weeks with the intention of it being constructed in the late fall.

Also new this year, will be a synthetic ice rink that will be placed under the medium shelter at Bruce Park. The Parks Department recently purchased the rink, along with several pairs of skates, from Grand Vue Park in Marshall County. It is anticipated that the rink will be open in November, December, and part of January, with hours to be determined. The dates and times will be dependent on the weather, and if skating is available at the Marina.

A new roof for the Lewis-Wetzel Family Center and Swimming Pool Locker Rooms will also be placed out for bid. Renovations to the front pool entrance and concession stand are also planned.

Fall programming will offer Sunday Soccer, Yoga, Boo at Bruce, Dog Obedience Class, a trip to Gatlinburg, Biltmore House, and more!
