Minor Male Apprehended In Hydro Attack

November 16, 2017
Wetzel Chronicle

A minor male has been apprehended and is facing charges in regards to the Nov. 11 attack of an 80-year-old woman near Hydro Drive in New Martinsville.

New Martinsville Police Chief Tim Cecil reported that an individual approached law enforcement on Nov. 15 and gave the name of the alleged attacker -- a minor male. Cecil said he sent Officer Michael Owens, along with Probation Officer Brian Hosteler, to speak to the male, who allegedly confessed to the crime.

Cecil said the male was currently serving probation; therefore, his probation was revoked and he was transferred to a correctional facility.

Cecil said law enforcement is unsure of the charges the male will face, as the victim is continuing to receive treatment for her injuries.

Since Cecil's statement to the media, Prosecuting Attorney Timothy Haught has released a statement, disputing that the juvenile was not on probation at the time of the alleged incident. Haught wished to clarify that NMPD investigated the incident and took "any alleged statement" from the juvenile.

Haught also wished to clarify that all juvenile proceedings are confidential and not subject to release to the public or media.

He also advised that any complaints against an individual, "juvenile or otherwise," is "merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt."

The attack occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Nov. 11 when the 80-year-old woman was walking the bike path near Hydro Drive in New Martinsville.

The male allegedly grabbed the woman and made a sexual remark to her; he then pushed and shook her, and further pushed her over the hillside.

The male then allegedly took off on foot, heading toward the locks and dam area.

The woman was then taken to the hospital for examination and treatment of multiple injuries.
