Festival of Trees Sponsors Home Tours

The Community Festival of Trees Committee is sponsoring "Holiday Home Tours." The home tours will take place on Dec. 10, from 2-5 p.m. The cost is $10 per ticket. Tickets need to be picked up in advance and can be purchased by calling Terri Tyler, Festival of Trees chairperson, at 304-771-5168. Tickets can also be picked up at the Wetzel County Solid Waste Authority building, located on North Street in New Martinsville.

Proceeds from this home tours event will benefit the Festival of Trees' 2018 event.

Organizer Fran Caldwell said six families have chosen to sign up for the home tours and are "all excited and didn't hesitate."

Residents and their homes involved are as follows: Linda and Bill Barth, Rae and Bill Stuart, Jane Ann Gamble, Michelle and Ed Toman, and Alicia and Rick Hissom. All residences are located in New Martinsville, with the exception of the Hissoms, which is located on Paden Fork Road, just 10 minutes out of town.

Festival of Trees

Plans for the third annual Festival of Trees are well underway. The event has been set for Nov. 17, 7-10 p.m. This year, the Festival of Trees is sponsored by The Friends of Wetzel County, and is fully known as the "Community Festival of Trees." Tickets for the event are $15.

The annual event features several Christmas trees, decorated by local organizations and businesses. These trees will be displayed at New Martinsville's city hall from Oct. 27 until Nov. 17, and then auctioned off at the Nov. 17 event. The Festival of Trees will be held at the Mollohan Center.

Organizations and businesses decorating trees for the 2017 event are as follows: Gabriel Project, Quota Club, Progressive Bank, Hope & Memories, Rotary, Bayer Heritage Federal Credit Union, New Martinsville Church of God, WVNCC, H&H Farms, C&C Designs, Wileyville Auction House, Shortline Station, 7-11, and Wetzel Valley Agencies.

While the trees are at the city building, residents have the opportunity to vote for their favorite tree, via penny vote. The money garnered from the votes also is distributed to the charities, while the Peoples Choice winner has bragging rights.

All proceeds - including auction earnings - will go to the charities chosen as this year's recipients - Friends of Paden City Pool, Wetzel County Hopes & Memories, and Grow Local Go Local.

Friends of PC Pool is a volunteer organization, which helps to maintain and keep open the pool in Paden City.

Wetzel County Hope & Memories provides gas cards to people who are receiving chemo/radiation treatments, and Grow Local Go Local is an organization educating and helping communities plant and harvest fresh vegetables and making a Farmers Market available to the New Martinsville area.

The event will feature a silent auction and $500 cash tree, sponsored by the Quota Club. There will also be a 50/50 drawing, music, dancing, and plenty of fun and laughs for everyone - along with a crazy Christmas sock contest!

The event is BYOB, and participants are encouraged to bring their own refreshments. Coke and Sprite will be provided.

The first 100 attendees of the event will receive a Star Shower Light Display, courtesy of Wal-Mart. Also, if 100 individuals attend the Nov. 17 event, $500 will also be given away. The winner, whose ticket is drawn, will receive $500 which will go toward the winner's charity of choice.

Over the past two years, the Community Festival of Trees has helped out nine different charities and raised over $10,000 for the charities.
