Lady Eagles Roll, Beat Madonna in Straight Sets

Magnolia freshman Lenica Grimm served up 14 points and dished out 19 assists to lead Magnolia past Weirton Madonna 25-14, 25-18 and 25-23 in high school volleyball action Sept. 9 in Weirton.Kyndra Pilant added 13 points, five aces, six kills, six blocks and made eight digs, while Ashley Kelly recorded nine points, that included five service aces. Kennedy Parsons served up eight points, while Shyanna White tallied three points.In addition, Maddie Winters made six kills, while blocking five shots and making six digs. Via and Kayna Anderson compiled 20 and 15 digs, respectively for the 2-0 Blue Eagles.Magnolia will host the senior led Monroe Central squad Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. inside the MHS Gymnasium.

After losing the first set 21-25 to the River Pilots, the Magnolia Blue Eagles fought off the opening set jitters and went on to beat their hosts 25-15, 25-11 and 25-16 to win its opening season volleyball match Sept. 7 inside R.L. Potts Gymnasium.

The Lady Pilots opened the opening set with a 14-4 advantage with the help of four service points by Cortny Sapp and Meagn Dennis. But, a bad serve and a Mady Winters dink and block pulled the Big Blue to 15-7. The two teams went back and forth till Winters blasted her first kill of the night along with a Kyndra Pilant dink pulled Magnolia to within 20-14.

The Pilots broke serve, but the young Eagles scored four straight points to cut the deficit to 21-18, before the Big Red Machine finished them off to win a wild and crazy 25-21 first set.

Ashley Kelly served up 10 straight service points, with Pilant leading the charge with three kills and one block, before the Lady Pilots broke serve with a long volley point.

Pilant's dink broken serve, while Kennedy Parsons pounded a pair of kills to push their lead to 14-1 that forced the Pilots second timeout of the set to talk things over and cool down the Eagles.

After the break, the Pilots broke serve and four straight points Allison Bennett adding a service ace for the Pilots. Both teams traded service points before Lauren Flannery blasted a kill.

Halee Schultheis served up four points, including an ace, to pull the Pilots to 16-10 before Shyanna White's block broke serve.

White added a service point, before the Pilots added a pair of points. A Winters block, along with Pilants kill, and Via Anderson brought down the house on an impossible save that Parsons finished off for the set-ending kill for a 25-14 second set victory.

River scored the first two points of the third set, but after breaking serve, Kelly racked up seven straight service points to give Magnolia an 8-2 lead. After each team broke each others serve, the Eagles Lenica Grimm served up three points, with Winters ending the run with a back-row kill.

After breaking serve again, the Pilots' Morgan Mahoney served up four points, with Flannery and Cortny Sapp each bomb-barring a kill to pull the Pilots to 12-8.

After breaking serve, Pilant served up four points, highlighted by a pair of Winters block and a dink to push the Magnolia lead back to 16-8.

Each team broke serve three times, with the last one coming from a Winters kill. She also turned around a served up the final three points, that including an ace to give Magnolia a 25-11 third set victory.

In the fourth set, Pilant, Winters, Parsons and White bomb-barred the Pilots with spikes after spikes, while finessing a few dinks here and their, and blocking countless shots at the net to win the set 25-16 and the match.

Kelly paced the Eagles with 19 service points, while Grimm and Pilant each with 10, and Winters with nine. Grimm dished out 26 assists, while Pilant controlled the net with 13 blocks, 11 kills, and bumped up nine digs.

In addition, Winters had 10 blocks, eight kills and 15 digs, while Parsons and White compiled nine points, four aces, eight blocks, five kills and seven digs. Via Anderson made 34 digs, while her sister Kenna Anderson made 15.

For the Pilots, Sapp tallied eight points, including five aces, while making five kills and four digs to lead the charge. Morgan Mahoney and Allison Bennett evenly divided 12 points, with Bennett tacking on four aces, one kill, eight digs and had 28 assists, and Mahoney bumped up seven digs. Flannery only tallied two points, with one ace, while making eight kills, 14 digs, four assists and one block.

In addition, Katie Straub netted five points, six kills and two digs, while Megan Dennis posted four points, and made six kills. Candace Caldwell tallied three points and made four digs, while Lacey Cordery secured 13 digs and made a kill. Macy Ladyga made four kills, one block and two digs, while Halee Schultheis bumped up a dig for all the River stats.

The Eagles will host Weirton Madonna in their home-opener Sept. 12, and Monroe Central Sept. 18 with junior varsity start beginning at 5:30 p.m.

After away games with Tyler and Valley Lady Pilots Monday and Tuesday they will take on country rival Monroe Central in Woodsfield Sept. 14.
