Caleb and Riley Nice Place in OVAC Wrestling Tournament

Parkersburg South won the the overall title once more in the 64th annual Ron Mauck Wrestling Tournament three-day event inside the newly remodeled WesBanco arena in Wheeling this past weekend.

Forty of the 53 OVAC schools competed with over 318 wrestlers in the three-day tournament. Magnolia placed fifth in the Class-AAA with 54 points, while the Silver Knights finished sixth. In class A/AA River finished in eighth place, while Parkersburg South won the Class-5A, Steubenville in Class-4A, Martins Ferry in 3-A and Shadyside Class A/AA.

The Eagles' Caleb Nice finished in third place in the 220 lbs. class, losing only one match to the eventual winner Alex Edgell of Brooke High School. He defeated Waker Anderson of Cambridge, Gary Tidwell of Meadowbrook and Garrett Givens of Beaver Local, before losing a 5-4 decision to Edgell. In the consolation bracket, Caleb beat Drone Moore of Steubenville and Caide Bunfil of Barnesville to win third place.

River Dibell of Tyler Consolidated lost his opener to Alex Edgell before beating Trevor Hayes of Caldwell and bowing out against River Pappas of Edison Local in the 220 lbs. Class.

Riley Nice won his first two bouts against Zane Everhart of Harrison County and Brise Bennett of University, before losing a decision to Austin Love of John Marshall on a decision. Riley then beat Alex Good of Cambridge before losing to Jascon Muldrew of Shadyside by a decision. Riley paid Love back in the fifth place match with a 5-3 decision in the 126 lb. Class.

Other Magnolia wrestlers winning two matches were Gage Adams in the 138 lb.; Skylar Yoho in the 145 lb. class.; and Mikey Hamrick in the 285 lb. class. James Still Wagner won one match.

Others competing in the OVAC for the first time were Nicholas Hall, Zach Thorpe, Zach ware, Trenton Robinson and Carter Pyles. Jack Booth lost his two bouts, but was injured in the opener in a decision and to Cody Hunter of Tyler Consolidated in the consolation bracket.

Others competing for Tyler Consolidated were Mike Doyle, Colton Mead and Wesley Watson. Brandon Keys finished eighth, while Cory Chipps finished seventh.

Those competing for the River Pilots were Ethan Lively who won one match, while teammate Zac Talbott won two matches.

Next up for Magnolia will be the Brooke Classic on Jan. 28 then will finish the season in the OVAC Dual's, Regionals, and state, while River will participate Feb. 4 in the Buckeye Local Invitational, Feb. 8 at Shenandoah, and will finish their season in their Sectional and Regional and state.

Magnolia Splits Two In Dual Matches

At the Cameron Tournament two weeks ago, Caleb Nice placed first at 220 pounds and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler. Riley Nice placed third at 126 pounds and Jack Booth placed fourth in the 132-pound weight class.

A week ago, the matmen traveled to Weirton for a quad match and fell to No. 1-ranked Linsly, 40-36. The match literally came down to a last-second reversal as time expired. It was probably the most exciting dual match the Blue Eagles have ever had. They also lost to Weir, 46-21, and beat Toronto, 60-18.

During the tournament, Caleb Nice won all six of his matches, while Riley Nice was 5-2, and Jack Booth was 4-4. Mikey Hamrick finished with a record of 4-4, while Nicolas Hall was 1-5; Carter Pyles, 2-4; Trenton Robinson, 3-5; Brody Rush, 2-2; James Stillwagner, 3-3; Zach Thorpe, 1-4; Zach Ware, 2-4; Kyle Waters, 2-2; Christopher Wetzel, 1-2 and Skylar Yoho, 5-3.
