Rally Propels Eagles Over Valley In Tourney

January 18, 2017

Magnolia overcame a 45-34 deficit, midway through the fourth period, in the consolation game of the Boggs Pizza and Grill's annual Roundball Classic to win 63-58 in overtime Jan. 14 in Tyler Consolidated Gymnasium.

With the Lumberjacks up, 45-34, with 4:14 on the clock, the Eagles' Jake Fruner put back a missed Magnolia shot, and shortly after, Leo Herrick was fouled by the 'Jacks Dylan Irvin. It was his fifth foul of the game, and he had to sit the rest of the way.

Up to this point, Irvin paced Valley with 16 points and a Bakers-dozen rebounds to go along with a pair of blocks. That took the wind out of Valley, and Magnolia started to take advantage.

Herrick drained one of two freebies to get the game to 45-37, but the 'Jacks Alex Midcap drained two free throws to get the lead back to double-digits.

However, Herrick would bank in a three-pointer off the glass to get Magnolia's deficit back into single digits, and the 'Jacks missed two chances to extend its lead, missing the front end of a one-in-one bonus twice in a row at the free throw line.

Herrick knocked in a deuce to pull the Eagles a bit closer, but Midcap answered with two charity tosses to push Valley's lead to 49-42 at the 2:38 mark. The 'Jacks missed two more free throws, while the Eagles' Tyler Williamson cashed in with two free throws.

Midcap sank two more freebies, but the 'Jacks only made the back end of a double-bonus from the charity line that pushed their lead back to 52-44 with 1:23 left in regulation.

Magnolia's Brooks Parsons got the Blue Eagles excited when he finished off a conventional three point play off a nice assist from Fruner with the time winding down to 1:12.

However, Midcap worked his magic once more, drilling two more from the free throw line with .48 seconds remaining and a 54-49 lead.

Herrick scored on a baby hook shot, and Parsons netted one of two charity

tosses to pull to within a deuce with 26.9 seconds remaining.

Parsons would deflect a ball from a Valley player over to Herrick for the tie-breaker, sending the game into overtime at 54-54.

Magnolia scored two straight baskets for its first lead of the game. Magnolia was double teamed in the back-court by Valley's intense defense and the Eagles Head Coach, Dave Tallman, tried to call a time-out that no officials could hear. Tallman went all the way past mid-court to do so, but instead of a time-out, the referees called a technical foul on Tallman.

Midcap sank both tries for his 10th straight, with a little over two minutes remaining in overtime. However, the Eagles would close the game out with five more points to get the win, with Midcap sinking a snow-bird at the buzzer for Valley.

Valley controlled the game the entire first quarter and third quarter, but in the end, the Eagles found away to get the win.

Midcap led the Lumberjacks with 22 points, including a pair of baskets from beyond the arch. He sank 10-10 from the free throw line, with eight coming in the fourth period and over-time.

Irvin tallied a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Levi Streets added nine markers. Tyler Kocher and Colby Bucher each tallied four points, while Peyton Bassett swished a three-pointer.

Herrick led four Blue Eagle double-digit scorers with 16 points, while Williamson followed with 15, Fruner with 14 points and Priem with 12. Parsons scored five points, while Peau Halahingano netted a free throw.
