BY BRUCE CRAWFORD - Staff Writer (bcrawford@wetzelchronicle.com) , Wetzel Chronicle

The Cameron Dragons raced out to a 22-8 first quarter lead and never took the foot off the pedal in hammering the host Valley Lumberjacks, 63-37, in boys' basketball action on Jan. 2 in Pine Grove.

In the opening period, the Dragons raced out to a 6-0 lead before the Lumberjacks got their first points by Levi Streets at the 4:47 mark with a basket off the glass.

However, the Dragons would go on a 5-0 run before Ethan Greathouse stopped the bleeding with his only bucket of the night. Cameron would go on a 9-0 run before Dylan Irvin added a deuce and Colby Bucher, a pair of freebies at the free throw line, before the Dragons closed out the period with a rebound put-back, and a 22-8 lead.

The Dragons turned the ball over with two straight miscues in the first minute of play of the second stanza. After the 30 second timeout, Irvin connected from downtown, while Tyler Kocher drained his only bucket of the night to cut the Cameron lead to single digits.

Bucher dished off a nifty pass to Alex Midcap to close the gap to 22-15, but Cameron ended the second stanza with three back-to-back two-pointers to give them a 28-15 lead at the break. In the opening half, there were 25 turnovers combined with the Lumberjacks leading in that category with a bakers dozen.

The Dragons scored two straight buckets to open the third period, and the Lumberjacks finally scored two minutes in with a Peyton Bassett three-ball.

After two straight Cameron buckets, Midcap scored a deuce and a pair of charity tosses mixed in between a pair of Cameron two-pointers. After a Ben Hart triple, Midcap tallied the final Valley third quarter bucket, while Hart added another triple and a deuce to extend the Dragons lead to 48-24 with eight minutes remaining in the game.

Bucher drilled a basket from beyond the arc to open the period for the hosts, but Cameron sank a deuce at the 6:17 mark, before Midcap added a free throw and a two-pointer. Following a Cameron bucket, Midcap would only sink one of three free throws when fouled on a three-ball attempt.

The Dragons closed out the game with nine points, while Irvin knocked down a deuce and Midcap ended the night with a basket from well beyond the arch.

Midcap had a double-double for the Lumberjacks with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Irvin dropped in seven points, and Bucher five. Bassett landed a triple, while Greathouse, Streets and Kocher each sank a deuce. Irvin paced the Lumberjacks with 12 rebounds.

Trey Routt paced the Dragons with 14 points, while Hart posted a dozen points, that included four baskets from beyond the arc, and Robert Milliken 10.
