What Is Best for Students?

March 2, 2016
Wetzel Chronicle

Unfortunately due to time and space constraints, we were unable to include all of the action from Monday night's meeting of the Wetzel County Board of Education in this edition of the Wetzel Chronicle. We will have a lengthier, more detailed story on our website, which will include testimony from the three Transfer Hearings.

However, there was one important point that we did not bring up in our print story, yet we should not fail to mention. This point was raised by Mary Young. Young, currently a second grade teacher at New Martinsville School, is being transferred to third grade, beginning next school year. But Young wasn't at the meeting to complain about this transfer. She was there concerned about class size, and she brought up some valid points. However, one particular question from Young captured our attention "What is best for our students?" After months of tension, miscommunication, and lack of communication between the board and the county's parents and teachers, Young expressed what is most important, in that simple question. She said she was not speaking to the board with vengeance or anger, and we believe her. We think the board should believe her too.

We don't know all the details of the issues that lie between the board and administrative staff, and the teachers. We do know there is a lot of anger and frustration, along with distrust.

But what is best for our students?

Surely it isn't the tension they are bound to feel. Students have attended some of the board meetings in the past few months, and have seen the discord firsthand. Even if they had not been present, they are not oblivious to the goings-on at the meetings. The negativity doesn't stay within the doors of the board office.

Debate is healthy, when done rationally and respectfully. Let's hope that all parties remain mindful of that most basic premise ... what is best for our students?
