Abandoned Buildings Are Plaguing New Martinsville

October 7, 2015
Wetzel Chronicle

A major issue that has been plaguing the city of New Martinsville is the abandoned buildings and neglected properties. Many residents have stood before council pleading for them to do something about these properties.

Many properties that have been reported to council have the same issues, including out of control weeds, tall grass, and abandoned vehicles in the yard. These unkept homes bring many issues with them. Not only do they lower the values of the other homes in the area, but they are unsafe, and bring unwanted problems like snakes, bugs and rodents.

Those who have stood before council have asked; why hasn't something been done? Are the ordinances in place sufficient to deal with these problems, or is it a matter of enforcement? Whichever the case may be, it is clear that a plan needs to be placed into action to clean up these areas and rid the neighborhoods of these eyesores.
