Let Freedom Ring

July 8, 2015
Wetzel Chronicle

We hope you all had a wonderful Independence Day. We definitely enjoyed covering the various local festivals marking the occasion.

From good food to fun games to gorgeous and glowing fireworks displays, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Hopefully you were able to cherish some sit-down time with family and friends as well.

With trying to stay modern, we log in frequently to social media. It seems like social media was buzzing this past week with Facebook and Twitter users engaging in heated debates on topics ranging from the Confederate flag to marriage equality.

The fact these debates have happened around the anniversary of our nation's birth reminds us of the many freedoms we have in this country, such as the very freedom to partake in debate and voice our opinions. Those of us at this office, as individuals, have a variety of differing opinions on issues. However, we all possess the same mindset when it comes to freedom of speech, which is obviously a staple at a newspaper: it's of definite importance.

On Independence Day we remember the reason we have this freedom along with so many others - it's because of our veterans who have so courageously and powerfully fought for those freedoms and fought to preserve our freedoms. It's also because of our military men and women who are currently serving, who are on standby and are ready at a moment's notice to fight for our freedoms.

We do not need to be mindful of this only on the Fourth of July though. We need to remember daily. We found this quote, from former Alabama Governor Bob Riley, and it describes our thoughts perfectly: "The men and women who serve in our military have won for us every hour we live in freedom, sometimes at the expense of the very hours of the lifetimes they had hoped to live."

Thank you to our nation's heroes. Thank you for our freedom.
