Department Loses A Special Police Officer

June 3, 2015
Wetzel Chronicle

This week the New Martinsville Police Department lost a very special officer. It was reported on Friday morning on Facebook that K-9 patrolman Ryder had died suddenly the night before. The city mourned with the flags lowered and flowers covering the K-9 cruiser.

K-9 units and their handlers are a very special team, especially Ryder and his handler, Detective Donnie Harris. Together over the years, they have detected numerous amounts of drugs. A relationship between a handler and his four-legged partner is a strong bond.

They are more than patrolman and patrolman, a handler and his K-9 are together day and night.

They go everywhere together, live and train together. It is not surprising that a unit gets so close.

By the amount of condolences that have flooded both Ryder's and Harris' Facebook page since the news broke, it is evident that Ryder meant just as much to the community as he did to the New Martinsville Police Department and will be greatly missed.

It was also added that a memorial service is being planned to honor Officer K-9 Ryder.

In the meantime, Officer Michael Owens of NMPD has started a Go Fund Me account to purchase a memorial for Officer K-9 Ryder. The Go Fund me account can be accessed at
