Defining Moment

February 18, 2015
Wetzel Chronicle

We should be able to trust a person in power, especially when that person is in a position to monitor our children and recommend what is best for them.

We were shocked Friday when we found out that Dennis Albright had been arrested for engaging in prostitution.

We had interviewed Albright several times over the past two years. He always seemed open, friendly, and honest.

Albright had over 30 years of experience in the education system.

The situation is a disheartening one. Needless to say, there were a variety of reactions on Friday morning. They were expressed in private, around the water cooler, and on social media.

It is understandable that it was a topic of conversation. Quite honestly, it should be. It is big news. It is a big rip in our social fabric.

But we also found that plenty of those reactions were also disheartening in themselves-fingerpointing, judging, snickering, making inappropriate remarks. The situation is bleak of course, but we have the choice to not let that define us as a county, as a school system.

At the end of the day the county's focus should be on the children of Wetzel County. This is what the board of education has chosen to do, and it's the right thing to do.

We were happy to find that our conversation with board members Monday focused not so much on what has happened, but what will be next. They look forward to a fresh start. Let's all do that.
