Illegal, Period.

January 7, 2015
Wetzel Chronicle

"It's just marijuana!" That is a statement we hear far too often when locally someone gets arrested for marijuana-related offenses.

Wetzel County Prosecuting Attorney Timothy Haught came up with the best answer to this sentiment, during an adjudicatory hearing Monday morning involving Jonathan Jones.

"Everyone ought to know that possession of marijuana, in any quantity in West Virginia, is against the law. Whether we like the law or not, possession of marijuana is against the law."

There you have it. People can use the argument that marijuana has possible medical benefits, and perhaps it does. However, that does not dispute the fact that in West Virginia marijuana usage is wrong. It's illegal-possessing, using, and dealing an illegal substance is wrong.

We've also heard criticism of law enforcement from individuals asking why they are arresting individuals for marijuana when there are those in the community dealing "harder" substances, such as heroin.

We honestly are quite grateful that law enforcement does not turn their heads because one offense does not seem quite as severe as another. We would think it would say something against the integrity of the officer if this was not the case-if they were not willing to uphold every law of the land.

Marijuana, at least in this state, is a black and white issue. There is no gray area when it comes to the legality. It's wrong.
