Concern Put Into Action

December 17, 2014
Wetzel Chronicle

We were stunned, but in a good way, recently when a reader from outside of the area sent in too much for their subscription renewal.

With the check the reader sent a very nice letter. Among other things, it said that they enjoyed reading our newspaper but were troubled to see that in the process of reporting all the news it included much about problems in our county that stem from drugs. In an effort to help curb that problem they included some additional money with their renewal and asked us to make a donation in a way that will help fight the problem.

Wow. That is the first time, perhaps ever but at in at least 20 years, that a reader of the Wetzel Chronicle has done such a thing.

Last week we we were thrilled to make the donation to the Wetzel County Coalition Against Drug Abuse. While the group undertakes several efforts to curb drug abuse in our community, Director Brandi Murray said the reader's donation would go toward their Keep A Clear Mind program. The four-week initiative is presented to all fourth graders in Wetzel County schools. It targets gateway drugs such as alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana. Murray said she hopes the program, which includes take-home newsletters for parents, helps to spark anti-drug conversations in local homes.

Many people complain about negative and court reporting, but few actually put some action behind their thoughts and put their concern into action.

Thank you reader, for striving to make a difference.
