Small Towns Live

December 10, 2014
Wetzel Chronicle

We recently heard of a college course that explored the death of small towns. The class's text asserted that the American small town no longer exists.

We beg to differ.

Obviously the author never came to Wetzel County. We have several small towns and they are quite delightful, thank you very much.

Events like the Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce's Christmas Parade and accompanying activities such as the tree lighting ceremony that were held this past Saturday are living proof. Also, Paden City persevered in the face of rain on Friday night to revive, and perhaps even expand, a forgotten tradition of a tree lighting ceremony.

No doubt Hundred's Old-Fashioned Christmas will also be a perfect example of an idyllic small town. Last year's inaugural event was just outstanding and we have no doubt Friday's repeat performance "will nearly be like a picture print by Currier and Ives"--to quote one of those Christmas songs we play continually this time of year.

In these very real small towns we know each other by name-at least last name when we can't remember the younger generation. We greet each other when we pass on the street. We ask how family members are doing. We like seeing people we know at the store instead of passing by nameless strangers. We're still here and we're happy.
