To The Editor:

I would like to thank New Martinsville’s 911 call center, fire department, police department, and EMS for their help on Saturday, Aug. 30, midnight.

We had just gone to bed and heard a sound like something had fallen on the floor. My son and husband are both in hospital beds. They both said nothing fell, but when I got up, I smelled gas.

I called 911 and told them my house was filling with gas. They sent the fireman and EMS and came to help me get my men out of the house. They said the gas was so bad they woke all my neighbors in the surrounding homes to get out too! (Sorry about that.)

They (police) blocked all the streets. They moved us all back and said even someone walking by with a lit cigarette could blow up the whole neighborhood.

After the gas was turned off and the hole patched, we were able to go back in our home about 2 a.m. – just before the thunderstorm and rain hit. We didn’t have gas or hot water for four days (holiday weekend), but it’s been repaired now thanks to Valley Plumbing and Electric and because of the quick work and response of New Martinsville’s fire department and police. I still have my home, and we still are alive to tell the story. We are so blessed to live in a community where people help at any time of day or night.

Thank you all again for your fast response and all the help.
