Limestone Fire Called Suspicious

By Staff | Jul 23, 2014

New Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Larry Couch has reported that fire fighters responded to a reported structure fire Saturday morning on Limestone Ridge Road at Box 172-A, New Martinsville.

The blaze was reported to Wetzel County 911 at 4:57 a.m. and crews responded seven minutes later, arriving on the scene at 5:21 a.m. The fire is now being ruled as suspicious in nature.

Couch reported that when NMVFD crews arrived on the scene they found a mobile home and shed on fire. Couch stated that the home was heavily involved in a fire on its north side and the shed had been completely consumed by, what appeared to be, a separate fire.

Crews were able to stop the fire in the mobile home but not before irreparable damage had been done to it, Couch reported. Both the shed and mobile home are considered to be a complete loss. Teams of firefighters from New Martinsville, Wileyville, and Paden City had to shuttle water into the location because of a lack of water there.

According to Couch, the mobile home was owned by Charles Mavety and had been recently occupied by Daniel Anthony, who recently relocated to Sistersville.

Couch said that the fires are both suspicious in nature and on the heels of another fire that occurred at the same location on, or about, July 11, in which a van owned by Daniel Anthony and Eva Mavety was completely consumed by fire. Couch stated that to his knowledge, no fire departments were summoned to the fire which occurred on the 11th, that the van was already consumed and had self-extinguished when found.

“We were able to save some potentially significant sources of evidence and have involved the Wetzel County Sheriff’s Office as well as summoned the assistance of the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office,” Couch stated. “If anyone has any information on these, or any other fires, they should contact the Fire Marshal’s Hotline at 1-800-233-FIRE,” he concluded.

Assistance was provided at the scene by Wileyville and Paden City Fire Departments as well as the Wetzel County Sheriff’s Office, Mon Power, and Wetzel County EMS. There were no injuries.
