Briggs’ Murder Charge Dropped

By Staff | Jul 16, 2014

Chelsea Briggs’ charge of murder was dismissed Tuesday in Wetzel County Circuit Court as she pleaded to a one-count information of conspiracy to deliver heroin.

Briggs, 24, of 368 Virginia St., New Martinsville, was originally indicted by the January 2014 grand jury with murder and delivery of a controlled narcotic substance (heroin), both to have occurred on Oct. 4, 2014.

Prosecutor Haught stated that after the indictment, there had been some strong exculpatory evidence that had come forward.

He stated there was weakness as to whether or not Briggs delivered the heroin to the alleged victim in the case and whether or not the heroin that the alleged victim had consumed, causing his subsequent death, was delivered by Briggs.

A pre-sentencing report is to be filed by Chief Probation Officer John D. Lantz and Briggs is to return to court on Sept. 5, 9 a.m., for sentencing.
