Sunfish Creek Festival Will Be Held Saturday

By Staff | Jun 11, 2014

The Ohio Valley River Museum is announcing events they will have during Saturday’s Sunfish Creek Festival in Clarington.

On June 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Jeffrey Spear, specialist for Garth’s Auctions, Inc., Columbus, Ohio, will be at the museum for an antique appraisal fair. Tickets for the appraisal are $10 for one item; $15 for two items; $20 for three items, up to $25 for five items. Bring your favorite family heirloom or flea market find into the museum to get an evaluation by our visiting antique expert.

Also during the festival, the museum will be host to the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s “Coastie”-a talking boat-in the parking lot to teach the many water safety rules and regulations. Children of all ages can enjoy “Coastie” in the parking lot from noon to 4 p.m. for free.

At 4 p.m. a special dedication ceremony will take place to honor, former Clarington resident, river historian and author, J. Mack Gamble. This will take place in the newly named “J. Mack Gamble Gallery”-the main room inside the museum. Visitors to the museum will see a collection of Gamble’s life as a principal at Clarington Elementary School (he taught in Monroe County for 40 years); along with personal items from his home.

The museum will be available for touring during the day of the festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, the opening day of the museum’s 2014 summer season. In addition to the many new items in the gallery, several other changes have been made at the museum to enhance the collection of river-history from our area. A new chair-lift is now available at the entrance of the museum, thanks to Swiss Valley Associates’ generous donation.

Regular hours for the remainder of June, July, and August are Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or call 740-391-2786 to schedule your club, church group, or organization’s visit throughout the months of summer.
