Speedway Season Opener Gets Underway After Delay

April 9, 2014
Wetzel Chronicle

While this past week's Wednesday Night Test n' Tune session and Saturday's Season Opener were pushed back because of weather, eager race fans waited, champing at the bit.

A new plan against Mother Nature will let enthusiastic racers and fans get their first glimpse of excitement on Sunday, April 6, for an afternoon matinee of horsepower and speed as the bullring will try once again to get the season's first laps turned.

Pit gates will open at 1 p.m., with practice getting underway at 2 p.m. General admission is free while pit tickets are priced at $15. So, come on out after church, get filled up at the Bullring Bistro for lunch and see your favorite racer Test n' Tune before the season starts.

It all gets real Saturday night, April 12, as the Tyler County Speedway kicks off the 40th Anniversary Season in grand fashion. The 4th Annual Pat Herrick Memorial/Retro Race Night will welcome the region's best modlite racers to Middlebourne.

In addition, a complete card of J&R Excavating Super Late Models presented by Midcap Land & Timber, Peoples Bank FASTRAK Late Models, Two Brothers Motorsports Modifieds, Hotmods, FWD 4 Cylinders and JJK Mineral Company Mini Wedges will welcome all. General admission is affordably priced at just $10 and children age 10 and under are always free.

Tyler County Speedway will be kicking off the Bilstein Modified Lite STARS Mid-Atlantic 2014 season April 12, hosting the fourth annual Pat Herrick Memorial that will pay paying $500 to win. The region's best modlite racers of the STARS Series will roll into town looking to take down the pesky bullring contingent of Josh Baldwin, Brandon Fluharty, Mitch Ward, Jeff Fornash and others, as they defend the home turf.

Tyler County Speedway will honor and celebrate the careers and achievements of Pat Herrick at the very appropriate and fitting Retro Race Night at the speedway. Join us for a night of nostalgia as we honor past speedway greats in appreciation of the good ol' days.

Not only will we see an action-packed card of intense Tyler County Speedway elbows up racing, but throwback helmet dashes, checkered flag laps, heat race pay, a Hotmod 'Crack the Whip', Modlite 'King of the Kounty' and more are on tap in honor of the golden era of Ohio Valley racing.

Last year, 2013 regional STARS champion Alan Knepper, driving his EVO #20 to victory, was able to race from third to first in just one circuit He then led the balance of the fifteen laps to score the victory for the STARS Modified Lite Mid-Atlantic Western Region.

Mitch Ward ran a close second until lap six, when he retired from action. That handed the runner-up position to Brandon Fluharty.
