Magnolia freshman grappler Caleb Nice (182 lbs.) reinvigorated the Magnolia wrestling program when he defeated a senior Cameron opponent in the WVSSAC Region I Class-1A/2A Regional finals with a pinfall at Fairmont Armory Feb. 22.
Teammates Riley Nice (120 lbs,) and Paden McConaughey (160 lbs.) each finished the regional with runner up awards, while Clay Adams (126 lbs.) placed third to earn a trip to Huntington Feb. 21-March 1 for the state tournament.
Also getting to stand on the awards podium were Joey Kelly (152 lbs.) and Jacob Rabel (220 lbs.) each placing fifth, while teammate Trinton Jett (106 lbs.) finished in sixth place.
Their teammates Joel Hatfield (170 lbs.), Brian Wilson (195 lbs.) and Chase Streets (138 lbs.) were both one win from placing in the top six. Other Blue Eagles making a trip to the regionals were Brandon Doty, Skylar Yoho, Joseph Layman and Phillip Harlan.
As a team, the Eagles finished in sixth place, with 117.5 points, while Oak Glen ran away with the regional championship with 253.5 points.
All four of the Blue Eagle grapplers earned a trip to the state wrestling championships combined for 116 wins and only 19 losses, with Caleb Nice leading the way with a 35-1 record on the season. Clay Adams goes into the tourney with a 31-6 record, Riley Nice has a 26-5 record, while McConaughey enters the state tournament with a 24-7 record.
Linsly topped Magnolia 150.5-138 points to win the Magnolia Wrestling Tournament Feb. 15 inside the MHS HammerDome.
Winning first places for Magnolia was Riley Nice, Harley Price, McConaughey and Caleb Nice, while Street and Kelly each placed second. Rabel and Archie Petin each came in third, while Jett, Hatfield and Wilson and Doty each finished in fourth place.
Others competing with wins during the tourney were Adams, Yoho, Mason Dowell and Phil Harlan. Frank Lancaster also competed for the young but improving Magnolia squad.
