Magnolia's Paden McConaughey, Caleb and Riley Nice were double winners in the OVAC Duel Class-3A Championships at John Marshall Fieldhouse Feb. 7 to help the Eagles claim the runnerup award.
Against Barnesvillle in the semifinals, it would go down to the wire on who would move on to the championships against the top-ranked Steubenville Catholic squad. After grabbing a 33-25 lead with three weight classes to go, the Eagles needed only one win to move on.
But, the Eagles would lose their next two bouts to fall behind 37-36 with one match to go. With only the MHS heavyweight Phillip Harlan ready for war, the Shamrocks couldn't find a grappler to go up against Harlan and would forfeit the match and move Magnolia into the finals.
Other Magnolia wrestlers making some noise in the semifinals against Barnesville were Skylar Yoho and Chase Street, each winning by pinfalls, while Trinton Jett scored six big points with a forfeit.
In the finals against a very good Steubenville squad, Clay Adams and Joe Layman each won their bouts with pinfalls as well as both the Nice boys.
Other Blue Eagles competing in the OVAC Duel championships were Joey Kelly, Joel Hatfield, Brian Wilson and Jacob Rabel.
The Eagles will host their annual tournament this Saturday starting at 10 a.m. inside the MHS HammerDome.
