To the Editor,
An open letter to Senators Rockefeller and Manchin and Representatives Capito and McKinley.
The Biggert-Waters "Flood Insurance Reform" Bill should have been titled the "Destroy New Martinsville, West Virginia" Bill.
And you voted for it.
Downtown New Martinsville has enjoyed a real Renaissance in the last 10 years.
A young lady opened a wildly successful Main Street fitness studio and bought a house here. The flood insurance on the house went from $700 a year to $7,500, which she cannot afford.
A young couple founded a wonderful dance and theatre school for children and bought a house. They will lose both.
All the businesses on Main Street will be destroyed.
Our end of Maple Avenue is a wonderful neighborhood: I tell everyone it is like Mayberry, and nobody had ever said I am wrong. Maple Avenue will be destroyed.
And you voted for it.
How anyone, even a Democrat, much less a Republican, can vote for a bill written by a Communist idiot like Maxine Waters, defies understanding.
New Martinsville had significant flooding in 1913, 1936, and 1937. So what? They cleaned out the mud. My house was built in 1884 and it's still here.
Due to the flood control dams built upriver since then, except for water in the basement, the residential areas haven't been seriously flooded since 1937.
But you want the residents of New Martinsville to pay ruinous rates of governmentally-mandated flood insurance. As if Obama Care wasn't enough.
You do not seem to be seriously worried. You apparently have not fired whichever of your incompetent assistants was supposed to have vetted this bill. That could be because nobody did vet it, according to the motto of another moron, California Democrat, Nancy Pelosi: "We have to pass this bill in order to find out what's in it".
In 18 months or so, you haven't taken corrective action. With a spectacular lack of a sense of urgency, Congress "studies the problem". There is apparently only a suggestion floating around to delay implementation for four years, which accomplishes nothing.
There is only on solution, which you obviously haven't figured out yet: this pernicious bill has to be immediately repealed.
If you had any honour, you would resign out of shame. Small chance of that happening.
