Batton Resigns From Coaching Positions

January 8, 2014
Wetzel Chronicle

After 15 years as head coach and 13 years as assistant coach, Mark Batton has resigned his position with the Magnolia High School Football Team.

His resignations from both that and head girls softball coach at MHS were part of the personnel matters that were approved at Monday night's meeting of the Wetzel County Board of Education.

It would be an understatement to say Batton has led both squads well. He has taken the softball team to seven consecutive regional finals.

But football is how Batton, MHS assistant principal, is best known and will be remembered. His teams have a 119-56 overall record. He has led 11 teams to the playoffs, reaching the semi-finals or finals in five of the last six years. The crown jewel is the West Virginia AA Football Championship in 2010, the same year Justin Fox won the Kennedy Award, under Batton's tutelage.

He was the 25th head coach in Magnolia's storied football history that spans over 100 years.

A 1977 graduate of MHS and 1981 graduate of West Liberty College, Batton has also influenced other sports at MHS. He was assistant track coach for three years and assistant basketball coach for nine years. One of those teams was Dave Tallman's 2000 state champion basketball team.
