Magnolia's Grace Berisford knocked down four baskets from beyond the arch, recorded four steals, and swatted away a pair of Monroe Central shots, while netting a team-high 17 points Dec. 5 at Woodsfield. But it wasn't enough to get by the Lady Seminoles, who prevailed
53-40 to open the Lady Eagles' 2013-14 basketball season.
The Eagles were up two baskets after one period of play before the Seminoles outscored the Big Blue 16-6 in the second period to grab a 23-17 lead at the break.
In the third period, Monroe outscored the Eagles 15-12 and 15-11 in the final period.
MHS freshman Kelsi Chapman came off the bench to tally six markers, while Mallory Chapman and Katie Blatt each tacked on four markers. Blatt also recorded eight rebounds, while making three steals and swatting away two Seminole shots.
In addition, Kiera Standiford tallied three points, while contributing 10 rebounds and swatting away four 'Nole attempts to score. Taylor Ludewig nailed a triple, while Audrey Gibb netted a deuce and pulled down four boards. Cierra Fowler netted a free throw while grabbing four boards.
The Blue Eagles' Junior Varsity Team defeated Monroe 53-40, with Tylar Seckman and Anna Gibb leading the way with 13 points each, while Autumn Cecil netted 11 markers.
The Lady Eagles will look to rebound from the loss on Dec. 12, when they play the Weir Lady Riders inside the MHS HammerDome, with the preliminary game getting underway at 6 p.m.
