The Pilots' Jordan Sapp scored two touchdowns and scrambled for 73 yards and Colton Wright split the uprights from 31 yards out. But, Buckeye Trail scored 15 unanswered second-half points to knockoff River, 21-17, Oct. 25 at Flannery Field.
Trail scored the game's first points on a one-yard run to lead 6-0 after a failed PAT. Later in the period, Sapp would follow his blocking into the end zone from 10 yards out to even the game at six. Wright's extra point kick gave the hosts a 7-6 advantage in the first period.
In the second quarter, Sapp again followed his blockers into the end zone, this time from eight yards out, to put River ahead 14-6 after the extra point conversion kick. Wright would split the uprights from 31 yards out with eight seconds remaining on the first half to give the home team a 17-6 lead at the break.
When play resumed, Trail scored once in the third and would get the game-winner with 2:08 in regulation to spoil the Pilots' Senior Night festivities.
River rushed for 94 yards, with Sapp leading the charge with 73 yards, while Bryce Cross tacked on the rest. Joey Flannery completed 10 passes for 142 yards and was picked off twice.
Cross hauled in six passes for 52 yards, while Brok Cross tacked on 78 yards on two snatches. Bailey Reusser and Cole Isaly each grabbed one pass for a combined 12 yards.
Buckeye lost 73 yards on 11 penalties, while the Pilots lost only 20 yards on two flags.
The Pilots will wrap up the season on the road when they travel down river to take on the Frontier Cougars at 7 p.m.
