Board Approves Matters

BY LAUREN RIGGS - Staff Writer (reporter@wetzelchronicle.com) , Wetzel Chronicle

The following personnel and routine matters were approved at the Aug. 5 meeting of the Wetzel County Board of Education. Board Vice-President Bob Patterson recused himself from personnel matters, and Board Member Linda Kirk expressed concern about the lack of an English teacher at Valley High School for the start of the school year. The board's assistant superintendent, Jay Yeager, empathized with Kirk's concerns but reassured her that the board was doing all they could do to find certified, applicable teachers as soon as possible. Noteworthy, he mentioned how a new teacher orientation meeting was held that day, with 30 people in attendance. He stated that he has never seen such a large number of people at an orientation.

Kirk also made mention of the request from the town of Hundred for an additional $1,000 for the board's lease of the athletic field. Secretary Jo Beth Simmons stated that the town felt at this time that they were in financial need of the extra money.

During approval of board policies, Patterson made mention of policy JM, Selection of High School Valedictorians and Salutatorians. Patterson stated that he recalls when the selection process changed from considering seven semesters to eight semesters. He said he understood where there were now problems because guidance counselors cannot get grade point averages determined at the end of eight semesters.

Tammy West, director of school improvement, stated that it was a crunch; however, the method was not undoable. "We've been doing it for years and now it is done through WVEIS.
