Graduates Receive Tad Fitzsimmons Scholarships

Three Wetzel County seniors have been awarded a $1,000 Tad Fitzsimmons Memorial Scholarship for 2013. The awards were presented on Awards Day at their high schools.

This year’s recipients are John Bates from Paden City High School and Eric Piekarski and Stephen Rogalski from Magnolia High School.

Bates, the son of Rose Lea Bates of Smithfield, was a member of Paden City High School’s National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, and was student body president. He participated in Math Field Day, Quiz Bowl, helped with Relay for Life, and volunteered for the American Red Cross blood drive. He maintained a 4.0 GPA and will attend West Virginia University this fall.

While attending Magnolia High School, Piekarski was a member of the Technology Student Association, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Student Council, Impact Team, and Drug Free Clubs of America.

He also participated in the Quiz Bowl and Math Field Day, as well as soccer and track. Eric also belonged to Young Life. While participating in his many activities, he earned a 3.9 GPA. Eric is the son of Mike and Jackie Piekarski of New Martinsville and will attend West Liberty University.

Rogalski, the son of Eva and Steve Rogalski of New Martinsville, maintained a 3.9 GPA while attending Magnolia High School. He participated in football, basketball, and track. He was a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Service Club, and involved in peer tutoring.

Stephen has been involved in many community and church activities including Ester Crumbly Food Drive, mission trip to Honduras, Salvation Army bell ringing, Kids Kollege, Relay for Life, and was an altar server at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church He will attend West Virginia Wesleyan College in the fall where he will play football and run track.

These scholarships are funded from proceeds of the previous Tad Fitzsimmons 5k Runs/Walks that were held for eight years in Tad’s honor and with the generous donations from businesses and friends.
