Ohio River Sweep

June 12, 2013
Wetzel Chronicle

River Sweep is an event organized by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, an interstate water pollution agency for the Ohio River Valley, along with environmental protection and natural resource agencies from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

The 2013 Ohio River Sweep has been set for Saturday, June 15. This will be the 24th year New Martinsville has been part of the Sweep. The sweep concentrates along both sides of the Ohio river through many of the states bordering the Ohio River.

All volunteers will receive at T-shirt. Those wishing to participate must sign a waiver of liability. This is a great opportunity to give back to the environment by cleaning up along the river.

There will be a meeting place and collection site beside the Wetzel County Court House in New Martinsville.

Garbage bags and free T-shirts will be handed out beginning at 10 a.m. behind the Wetzel County Court House. Volunteers need to bring gloves. The cleanup will continue until noon.

For more information on how to be a part of the clean up, contact Jodie Weckbacher, Wetzel County Coordinator at NM Parks and Recreation Department, 304-455-9130.

In Tyler County, persons wanting to volunteer for this event can show up at Paden City Park's boat dock at 9 a.m. The River Sweep is sponsored by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) and other state and environmental agencies from Pennsylvania to Illinois. ORSANCO is the water pollution control agency for the Ohio River and its tributaries.
