Blue Eagles Fall Little Short In OVAC?Title Game

By Staff | May 8, 2013

Linsly scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning to edge Magnolia 2-1 in a pitchers duel in the OVAC Class-AAA Championship game May 3 in Toronto.

Magnolia jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first when Chandler Sapp scored on a passed ball.

The scored stayed that way until the Cadets scored the tying run in the sixth when a shot dropped fair down the left field line, scoring a runner from second.

Linsly opened the eighth with a single to centerfield. After a ground out that moved the runner to second base, the Eagles intentionally walked the next batter. The Eagles’ Kyle Elliott struck out the next batter, but a routine pop up in shallow rightfield was misjudged because of a potent wind and fell just off the glove of Tanner Hanna. The Linsly runner at second was running on the play and scored the go ahead run.

The Cardiac Kids from Magnolia fought back. With one out, Elliott got the tying run on at second in the bottom half of the eighth. After an Eagle strike out, Hanna ripped a shot to deep right center that the centerfielder made a shoestring catch to end the game and give Linsly the title.

“I’m so proud of my kids,” said Magnolia Head Baseball Coach Dave Cisar. “Elliott was super on the mound, and Grant Cain was great behind the plate. We had some kids who were hurt that did a great job.”

Cisar continued, “Look out, cause this will make us a better team. You have to look at the positives. This was just a bump in the road. Congrats to Linsly. It was a heck of a high school baseball game.”

Elliott struck out nine and walked four, while scattering four hits, to lead the Eagles from the mound, while Sapp lined a pair of singles from the dish.

The Eagles will now look to the post season where they are the number one seed in the Region I, Section II Sectionals to be held in Cameron. The Eagles will play the winner of Paden City and Cameron Tuesday with results unavailable by press time. If they win they will play Thursday at 5 p.m. and will take on the loser of Paden City and Cameron Wednesday at 5 p.m. if they lose. The championship will be held Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday if the tournament is extended.

The Magnolia Blue Eagles finished an April 16 suspended game with Union Local in Morristown May 1 with an 11-1 victory.

With the Eagles on top 8-0 April 16, Union Local would stop the shutout, scoring one run in the sixth. But the Eagles would tack on three runs in the bottom half to give them a win in the 10-run, mercy-rule shortened game.

Jake Starkey pitched the final inning and one-third for Magnolia to get the win, striking out two and walking one. Chandler Sapp started in the April 16 game and struck out five and walked two.

Magnolia 12, Central 2

Magnolia’s Zach Wilhoite tossed a five-inning mercy-rule shortened four-hitter and belted two singles to lead the Blue Eagles to a 12-2 victory over Wheeling Central Maroon Knights at the J.B. Chambers Complex in Wheeling April 30.

The Eagles tallied two-runs in each of the first three frames to put up a five spot in the fourth to give themselves an 11-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the fourth inning.

Central stopped the bleeding and the shutout with a run in both the fourth and fifth. But, the Eagles dented the scoreboard one more time in the fifth to give them the 10-run cushion needed for the 10-run mercy-rule.
