The Eagles scored four runs in the first, two in the second, and five more in the third for 11 runs, but the Huskies tallied three runs in the bottom half of the first, four in the second, and six more in the third for a 13-11 advantage.

Both teams then pulled their starting pitchers and it was the Eagles that took advantage, scoring a run in the sixth and 11 more in the seventh to pull the game out of reach for the Huskies.

The two teams combined for 36 runs, 34 hits, and six errors, with Magnolia on the top side of each. Four Magnolia batters pounded Husky pitching for three or more hits, while three other Blue Eagles each added two hits.

The Cardiac Kids from Magnolia did it again April 9, scoring two runs in the seventh to come from behind to beat the Ritchie County Rebels 8-7 in Ritchie County.

With Magnolia down two runs in the top of the seventh, Blue Eagle freshman Chase Miller drove in the winning run to seal the win.

Magnolia 9,

RCB 4

Host Magnolia won its eighth straight game April 11 with a 9-4 win over Robert C. Byrd, as freshmen Derrick Blain and Chase Miller combined on a three-hitter and Blue Eagle bats pounded RCB pitching with 13 hits

Blain walked the Flying Eagles’ leadoff batter, but two Magnolia errors and a single would give the visitors a 2-0 lead. But, Blain took matters into his own hands and struck out three batters to retire the side.

In the home half of the first, Ryan Walton walked and Chandler Sapp sent a fastball out of the park for a two-run homer to knot the game at two. After a Tanner Hanna single, Miller belted a single off the pitcher’s glove that moved Hanna to third. Grant Cain then walked to load the bases. However, RCB got out of it without any further damage.

Neither team scored in the second, but MHS missed a routine out-of-bounds pop-up between third and home to give the visitors new life. RCB singled and then got a free base on a hit batsman with nobody out. However, Blain would nip the runner at third on a nice force out and Cain would pickoff an RCB runner trying to steal third. Blain would get out of the jam by striking out the next batter, keeping the score knotted up at two.

Blain opened the home half with a shot up the middle and Walton would walk for the second straight time. After a fielder’s choice, there were runners at the corners with one out. Magnolia was caught stealing and lost another chance to cash in with a flyout to end the second inning.

In the third frame, Blain got a little wild and walked in two RCB base runners. That prompted MHS Head Coach Dave Cisar to bring in Miller, who put out the fire by striking out the only batter he faced.

Zach Wilhoite opened the frame with a standup double and Hanna knocked him in with a single and moved to second on the play. Miller followed with his own single, scoring Hanna to tie the game at four.

After Cain singled, Jake Starkey laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that put runners at first and second. Blain was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Walton knocked in a run with a bloop single and Sapp would RBI another Blue Eagle on a fielder’s choice to give Magnolia a 6-4 advantage. Kyle Elliott walked to load the bases, but a Wilhoite shot down the third base line was hauled in for the force out, ending the MHS rally.

The Magnolia defense held Byrd in check the rest of the way and scored three more runs in the fifth to seal the deal.

Blain started on the hill, striking out four and walking seven, while Miller picked up the win in relief with six Ks and a walk.

At the plate, Sapp continued his torrid hitting with two singles, a home run, and three RBIs to lead the 12-1 Blue Eagles. Hanna and Miller each recorded three hits, while Wilhoite added a double. Blain, Cain, and Walton each smacked singles in Magnolia’s 13-hit attack.
