Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis Has Local Ties

The 12th annual Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis OH vs. WV Basketball Classic will be held Friday, April 5, at Parkersburg South’s Rod Oldham Athletic Center. The girls’ game will tip-off at 5:30PM with the boys’ game following.

The Ohio boys will be coached by Vinton County’s Matt Combs and assisted by former Alexander Coach Blaine Gabriel.

Fort Frye’s Shon Smith, who finished with 1,277 career points, has been selected as the team captain. Other members of the Ohio squad include River Pilots Cody Caldwell and Brett Price.

The West Virginia boys’ squad will be coached by Parkersburg South’s Mike Fallon and assisted by D.A. Wilson of Wirt County.

Magnolia’s Mark Winters, who surpassed the 2,000 point scoring mark this season, has been selected as the team captain. Other members of the West Virginia squad include Darren Heintzman of Tyler Consolidated.

The Ohio girls’ team will be coached by River’s Rick Isaly and assisted by Fort Frye’s Dan Liedtke.

Fort Frye’s Deidra Combs has been selected as the team captain. Combs, a Fairmont State recruit, was an All-Ohio honoree and District 12 Player of the Year, being invited to play in the Ohio North/South game on Sunday, April 21. Other members of the Ohio squad include Lady Pilots Cassidy McCullough and Emile Weaver.

The West Virginia girls’ squad will be coached by Paden City’s Kelly Sine and assisted by Herbert Hoover’s Greg Ullman.

St. Mary’s Audra Clark, the LKC Player of the Year and a WV Class A first Team All-State honoree, will be the team captain. Clark has committed to play basketball at Rio Grande next season.

Other members of the West Virginia squad include Lady Wildcat Logan Cosper and Tristin Toman of Ritchie County.

The boys slam dunk contest and 3-point shoot-outs will take place at halftime of the girls game. The girls 3-point shoot-outs and free-throw shooting contest will take place at halftime of the boys game.
