Over the years, I have tried to help with stray/rescue animals and assist with the spay/neutering for them. Both the Humane Society and the Wetzel County Animal Shelter offer some spay/neuter assistance. Typically, the assistance also includes a rabies shot.

There is such an overpopulation of cats and dogs alone, not to mention other types of pets. I read an article several years ago that said if every person owned three cats/dogs, it may have covered the “then current” population of those two types of pets.

Myself, I now have too many. In addition to my five cats (all stray/rescues), circumstances have added two dogs. One dog is elderly and her owner died and the second, a chocolate lab, was acquired from a woman who had moved here for Pennsylvania and had gotten the lab as a puppy from the local animal shelter about four years ago. She moved and could not take him with her. Most currently, I am getting a cat neutered that has been coming here to eat for about one-and-a-half years. I will probably be looking for good homes for a few of them.

In closing, I would like to add a few facts. Married people tend to live a few years longer than people who live alone, but people who have pets tend to live a few years longer than those who don’t have pets! Please have your pets spayed/neutered and offer assistance to animals that have, or appear to have, no owners.

Thank you!
